The main objective of this course is to improve your writing skills in English through reading and learning to emulate the effective construction of English passages. Specifically, you will learn to summarize the reading passage and to make an argument in support of, or against, an issue. You must be committed to studying outside of class to be successful in this course. Your success depends on your efforts! |

Reading Pass 3, Second Edition (Nan'un-do) A Shorter Course in Science and Technology Vocabulary (Nan'un-do): This is for self-study, with quizzes during class. Other materials will be provided electronically by the instructor. |

The first half hour of the class will be spent doing extensive reading, where you will be reading a lot of books in easy English. You will work with the textbook the rest of the class time. You will again spend much time reading, as the ability to write is dependent on the knowledge garnered from reading. In each class you will practice summary writing and writing to make an argument. Also done every week are vocabulary quizzes and 5-minute quick writes. Class 1: Class introduction Class 2: Syllabus overview / Extensive reading explanation / Library tour Class 3: Characteristics of Academic English / Academic paper format Class 4: What is a summary, and how to write one / 1: Pro Gaming Class 5: IEEE style / Practice making a reference list / 2: The Blogosphere Class 6: 3: Organic Food Class 7: 4: Franchises Class 8: 5: Character Culture Class 9: What is a one-sided argument, and how to write one Class 10: 6: Language Change Class 11: Academic Reading Test Class 12: 7: Unlocking Motivation Class 13: 8: Yellow Dust Storms Class 14: 9: The End of Privacy Class 15: 10: Going Carbon Neutral |

1. Read the passage in the assigned lesson before class and be familiarized with the concepts discussed. 2. Review your learning after class, and complete whatever assignment due next week. 3. No class time is set aside for midterm and final “examinations.” All papers are to be written outside of class. 4. You will earn extra points for reading and posting reports outside of class. (One extra report will carry the same weight as one in-class report.) |

Compositions must at least be academically written and intelligible. Speech in class must at least be understandable to the instructor and audience. 2. Missing class reflects negatively on your grades. 3. 秀≧90%, 優≧80%, 良≧70%, 可≧60%, 不可<60% The grades in WebClass are not your official grades. The official grades will be given to you by the university. |
