In this class you will learn how and why to write a summary. You will also learn how and why to write a one-sided argument. You will also learn how to evaluate whether your writing is accomplishing its goal. |

Week 1 Guidance Week 2 Course introduction; Paragraph form; Capital letters. Week 3 Types of text; What is a summary? Reportative verbs Week 4 How to analyze an essay; Background, main point, supporting ideas Week 5 Writing topic sentences and wrap-up sentences Week 6-7 Improving your writing through peer evaluation In-class discussion of student summaries; maintaining subject and verb agreement, writing objectively, making logical transitions. Week 8 Collect final summary assignment. What is an argument? What makes an argument one-sided? Week 9 Practicing argument structure. Finding the sub-arguments in essays. Week 10-11 Picking topics and researching for them Week 12 Writing your introduction Week 13 Writing your body Week 14 Writing your conclusion Week 15 Collect final one-sided argument; Course overview; Course evaluation survey This class will be conducted in English. There will be reading and/or writing assignments on most weeks. Many classes will start with a group discussion based on the homework, so it is essential for the content of the class that all students do the homework every week. Critical evaluation of oneself and of peers will be major components of the class. This entails that revision will also be a major component. Always bring a learner’s English dictionary to class (paper or digital). An English-Japanese dictionary can also be useful. |
