The objectives of Academic Written English I are: Students will demonstrate the ability to: • participate effectively in academic discussions • identify instances of plagiarism and explain why it is a serious offence in academic writing • use academic writing conventions in their own writing • use of the third-person rather than first-person perspective • explain the main points of a text • argue in support of an issue • summarize, paraphrase, and quote, as appropriate • read critically and revise thoughtfully through drafting and staged assignments. • devote time to the revision process in order to craft a successful essay |

TENTATIVE COURSE OUTLINE ** This calendar is likely to change in order to accommodate learning needs. APRIL Week 1: Guidance Week 2: Course Overview & Introductions/ What is Academic Writing? Week 3: Plagiarism/How to Summarize, Paraphrase, and Quote to Avoid Plagiarism MAY Week 4: What Makes Good Writing? (The Six Traits of Effective Writing) Week 5: Essay Structure, Good Essay Topics, & the Introductory Paragraph Week 6: Elements of Good Thesis Statement/Round Robin Activity Week 7: Introductory Paragraph Peer Review & Revision JUNE Week 8: Body Paragraphs/Conferencing Week 9: Body Paragraphs (cont'd) & Concluding Paragraph Week 10: Class Exercise 1 (Peer-Review, Revision, & Conferencing) Week 11: Academic Reading Test [Essay - First Draft Due] JULY Week 12: Concluding Paragraph (Elements of Good Summaries) Week 13: Class Exercise (Peer-Review, Revision, & Conferencing) [Essay - Final Draft Due] Week 14: Class Exercise Week 15: Review/Reflection/In-class course evaluation |

Students are expected to: • stay on top of their assignments (both in-class and homework) • balance their responsibilities and set their own priorities • set aside at least an hour per week outside of class for studying and assignments |
成績評価方法 および評価基準 (最低達成基準を含む) (1,000文字以内) /Evaluation and grading (up to 1,000 letters) |
Participation & Effort 10%; Academic Reading Test (June 28th) 5%; Vocabulary Quizzes 10% Homework 10%; Written Projects (one-sided essay & summaries) 65% **Rubrics will be provided before each assignment or task. Your grade for the semester is calculated from your achievement in the assignments and your effort in class and homework. You will have to give evidence that you have done the work. Remember, you get what you earn. I do not hand out A’s at the door. If you are going to be absent, please let me know before class begins to make arrangements for turning in your homework, making up class work, or getting any assignments or handouts you missed. If you do not contact me before class starts, any assignments you need to turn in will be considered late and you will not get credit for them. |
