The course will aid students with academic short essay writing from sentence level to essay length. Essential skills such as finding key information, paraphrasing, referencing and synthesizing from different sources will be covered. Reading materials will be relevant to UEC and motivating. Classes will be taught in English. |

Week 1: Guidance and choosing class. Week 2: What is academic writing? Selecting a topic for a two sided argument. Week 3: Skimming and Scanning for key information. Week 4: Locating information, good vs. bad sources. Deciding final essay topic. Week 5: Paraphrasing, quoting and referencing. Week 6: Summarizing and using linkers. Mini essay 1 set. Week 7: Synthesizing from multiple sources. Week 8: Paragraph structure. Providing support and examples. Mini essay 2 set. Week 9: Contrasting different points of view. Week 10: Hedging language. Opinion vs. fact. Mini essay 3 set. Week 11: Writing Introductions and Conclusions. Week 12: Academic register. Week 13: Including own opinion. Week 14: Proof reading and peer correction. Week 15: Error checklist and hand in. Week 16: Feedback and reflection. |
