The general theme of this course is the individual and society.
1. Students' English communication and discussion skills will be improved through class activities and presentations.
2. A goal of this course is to promote critical thinking skills.
3. Students will be able to present 2-sided academic arguments. They will be able to make a stand and give reasons and evidence to support their position on a variety of topics.
4. Students will be able to present a simple procedure in English.
5. Students will be able to give a well structured presentation on a topic in English.

Homework will be assigned for each class. Homework in many cases will be done in preparation of class activities and is therefore an important component of the class work.

1. In-class participation 30%. This grade includes the student's participation in class activities and discussions. This grade also takes into account the student's attitude towards the class and positive interaction with other students. The grade also includes homework. It is therefore imperative that the students attend every class and finish all assignments on time.
2. 2-sided argument presentation = 25%
3. Procedure presentation = 20%
4. Final presentation 25%
Presentations will be assessed on content as well as spoken ability. The final presentation for this class will be a group presentation using power point as a visual aid.

Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself. (Chinese Proverb). It is so important for students to put time and effort into learning a language. Attending every class session is very important so that you do not miss out on any key information. Also, please remember that the amount of time we spend together is relatively short so self-guided study is really a key to success.
