This course aims to help students develop the practical skills and confidence that will enable them to communicate effectively in spoken English. The course provides opportunities for students to practice the language through conversations, discussions and presentations. Students are, therefore, encouraged to work in pairs and small groups on various activities designed to help develop communication skills. Grammar, vocabulary and expressions are introduced in context, through readings, and not in isolation. In addition to a balanced development of the target language, students can expect to develop critical thinking skills through the writing of personal reflection notes throughout the course.

None. The course employs English language materials from various sources: published books, textbooks, articles in addition to the Internet. The materials will be carefully selected and prepared by the professor in order to meet students’ needs. This course is student-centered and aims to engage students in various individual and group activities. Student-student interaction and collaborative work are therefore key throughout the course.

【Week 7】Talking about travel experience.

【Week 8】Presentation skills practice: Slides & graphics, peer feedback.

【Week 9】Mid-term presentation: Video recording submissions.

【Week 10】One-sided Argument: Expressing opinions on an issue.

【Week 11】Presentation skills practice: Word emphasis, peer feedback.  

【Week 12】Two-sided argument: Expressing opinions on an issue.

【Week 13】Presentation skills practice: Numbers, tables & graphs, peer feedback.

【Week 14】Final Presentation, Day 1: Putting it all together.

Preparation before class is very important throughout this course. Students are set weekly writing assignments and for each assignment, they are required to write down their opinions and ideas which are then shared with peers in subsequent classes. Moreover, they will be expected to prepare and deliver short presentations on given topics

This course adopts an accumulative grading system which divides the final grades into percentages.

- Small-group presentations (x5) 50%
- Mid-term Presentation (Video recorded) 25%
- Final presentation (Delivered in front of the class) 25%

Note: Students are required to attend at least 11 of the 15 classes.
Students who miss 4 or more classes, without valid certified reasons, will be required to speak directly to a university counselor. Failure to do so will result in automatic course failure. Attending 11 lessons does not guarantee a passing grade, please be aware of the other assessment criteria.

The key to speaking fluently in a second language is frequent exposure and practice. Please make the most of the limited course hours. Do not forget to bring your own electronic or paper bilingual dictionary (English-Japanese). It will be a very useful tool throughout the entire course.
