/Themes and goals(up to 2,000 letters)
The objectives of Academic English for the Second Year I
Students will demonstrate the ability to:
• participate effectively in academic discussions
• use academic writing conventions in their own writing
• identify instances of plagiarism and explain why it is a serious offence in academic writing
• introduce the essay’s topic/purpose clearly and concisely
• communicate the relevance and importance of the topic orally and in writing
• argue in support of or against an issue
• summarize, paraphrase, and quote, as appropriate
• read critically and respond orally or in writing to implied ideas
• question the text. Some questions to consider include:
 what issues or problems does the author address?
 What is the author’s main point?
 What points or assumptions does the author make, and how does s/he support it?
 What are strengths and weaknesses? Where are problems with the argument?
• evaluate the text’s strengths and weaknesses
• read critically and revise thoughtfully through drafting and staged assignments.

Students are expected to:
• stay on top of their assignments (both in-class and homework)
• balance their responsibilities and set their own priorities
• set aside at least an hour per week outside of class for studying and assignments
• work outside of class for preparation for projects, presentations and writing assignments.

Participation & Effort 10%; Vocabulary Quizzes 10%; Class/Homework 10%; Presentations 35%; Written Projects 35%
**Rubrics will be provided before each assignment or task.

 Your grade for the semester is calculated from your achievement in the assignments and your effort in class and homework. You will have to give evidence that you have done the work. Remember, you get what you earn. I do not hand out A’s at the door.
 If you are going to be absent, please talk to or email me before class begins to make arrangements for turning in your homework, making up class work, or getting any assignments or handouts you missed. If you do not contact me before class starts, any assignments you need to turn in will be considered late and you will not get credit for them.
