This course aims to help students develop the practical skills and confidence that will enable them to communicate effectively in spoken English. The course provides opportunities for students to practice the language through conversations, interviews presentations, and discussions. Students are, therefore, encouraged to work in pairs and small groups on various activities designed to help develop communication skills. Grammar, vocabulary and expressions are introduced in context, through readings, and not in isolation. In addition to a balanced development of the target language, students can expect to develop critical thinking skills through the writing of personal reflection notes throughout the course.

None. The course employs English language materials from various sources: published books, textbooks, articles in addition to the Internet. The materials will be carefully selected and prepared by the professor in order to meet students’ needs. This course is student-centered and aims to engage students in various individual and group activities. Student-student interaction and collaborative work are therefore key throughout the course.

Week 1: Guidance: Explaining the content of the course.
   
Week 2: Talking About Reasons Why English is Important: Explaining the main points of a text. Reading, expressing the main points of an article, expressing one’s opinions, writing a self-reflection note(*).

Week 3: Delivering a Presentation: Giving a self-introduction presentation. Introducing the structure of academic presentations, watching/reading a model presentation, learning and practicing new vocabulary, drafting a self-introduction and delivering a short presentation.  

Week 4: Talking About “An Influential Person in My Life”: Giving reasons for one’s opinions. Introducing the topic (Reading), learning and practicing new vocabulary, brainstorming one’s ideas before writing an outline, presenting  a person in one’s life. (writing a self-reflection note)      

Week 5: Talking About Social Media: Presenting arguments for/against an issue. Introducing the topic (Reading), learning and practicing new vocabulary, brainstorming and writing ones’ ideas, presenting one’s arguments against/for social media. (writing a self-reflection note)

Week 6: Discussing Social Issues: Presenting arguments in support of a social issue. Introducing the topic (Reading), learning and practicing new vocabulary, brainstorming and writing down ones’ ideas, presenting one’s arguments in support of a social issue. (writing a self-reflection note)

Week 7: Sharing a Personal Experience: talking about past experiences and life lessons. Introducing the topic (Reading), learning and practicing new vocabulary, brainstorming and noting ones’ ideas, talking about a personal experience and what was learned from it. (writing a self-reflection note)

Week 8: Mid-term Presentation.

Week 9: Talking about Research and Data: Talking about Primary and Secondary data. understanding both qualitative and quantitative research, reading and analyzing a research paper. (writing a self-reflection note)    

Week 10: Talking About Questionnaires: Conducting a survey. Mind-mapping, analyzing a questionnaire, creating a short questionnaire and executing the questionnaire.

Week 11: Talking About Interviewing: Conducting a short interview. Mind-mapping, deciding who to interview, developing interview questions, interviewing classmates.   

Week 12: Speaking About Observing. Creating and explaining an observation checklist. Mind-mapping, talking about ethics, reading a sample of observation data, developing and explaining an observation checklist.     

Week 13: Talking About Culture Shock
Introducing the topic (Reading), learning and practicing new vocabulary, brainstorming and writing ones’ ideas, presenting one’s arguments in support of a social issue. (writing a self-reflection note)

Week 14: Talking About Communication Styles.   
Introducing the topic (Reading), learning a practicing new vocabulary, brainstorming and writing ones’ ideas, presenting one’s arguments in support of a social issue. (writing a self-reflection note)

Week 15: Final Term Presentations.

Week 16: Final Term Presentations.  

(*) Reflection notes will be assigned as homework.

Students are expected to review class work and complete the set homework assignments. They are also encouraged to come prepared to every class and share their opinions on given topics.

This course adopts an accumulative grading system which divides the final grades into percentages. It is important to note that there will NOT be a final test that counts for 100% of your grade.

Participation 20%
Reflection notes 30%
Mid-term presentation   25%
Final presentation      25%

Note: Students are required to attend at least 11 of the 15 lessons.
Students who miss 4 or more classes, without valid certified reasons, will be required to speak directly to a university counselor.  Failure to do so will result in automatic course failure. Attending 11 lessons does not guarantee a passing grade, please be aware of the other assessment criteria.

Your attendance and participation in class activities are two of the most important elements towards your success in this course. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to contribute actively in class by asking questions and sharing your ideas and opinions in English as much as possible. Do not forget to bring your own electronic or paper bilingual dictionary (English-Japanese). It will be a very useful tool throughout the entire course.
