This course aims to help students develop basic research and writing skills at the essay level. The course introduces the language of research, the elements of the research process and ethical principles and challenges of research. During the course, students will conduct an academic investigation of a social issue, either individually or in small groups. Students, therefore, will have the opportunity to critically review literature relevant to their interests or academic fields, write a report of their research methodology and findings, and explain how their research findings are useful in forming their understanding of their social and work environment.

None. The course employs English language materials from various sources: published books, textbooks, articles in addition to the Internet. The materials will be carefully selected and prepared by the professor in order to meet students’ needs. This course is student-centered and aims to engage students in various individual and group activities. Student-student interaction and collaborative work are therefore key throughout the course.

Week 1: Guidance

Week 2: Course Guidance: Reviewing the course syllabus and class policies, talking about “information literacy”, writing a self-reflection note.   

Week 3: Talking about research and data: Talking about approaches to research, understanding primary and secondary data, writing a self-reflection note.

Week 4: Talking about questionnaires/surveys: Mind mapping, analyzing different question types, creating a short questionnaire using different types of questions, executing the questionnaire.

Week 5: Talking about observation. Mind-mapping, talking about ethics, reading a sample of observation data, developing and explaining an observation checklist.        

Week 6: Talking about interviewing: Mind-mapping, deciding who to interview, developing interview questions and conducting an interview (video recording the interview).

Week 7: Analyzing survey and interview data.
Talking about content analysis methodology, transcribing and analyzing interview data.  

Week 8: Mid-term Presentation:  Presenting preliminary research findings to the class.

Week 9: Writing topic Sentences. Understanding topic sentences, writing topic sentences, and writing paragraphs based on topic sentences.

Week 10: Writing supporting sentences. Understanding the function of supporting sentences in a paragraph, writing topic and supporting sentences, understanding the importance to stay on topic.      

Week 11: Writing concluding sentences: understanding concluding sentences, pass it on writing activity.   

Week 12: Writing an academic essay: understanding the structure of an essay, analyzing an academic essay.      

Week 13: Using secondary data: understanding the different types of secondary data, secondary data sources, finding three secondary data sources on a specific topic.        

Week 14: Citing and referencing: Understanding APA style referencing, understanding plagiarism and talking about ethical issues.  

Week 15: Understanding the argumentative essay. Understanding a two-sided argument, organizing one’s argumentative essay, collecting primary and secondary data.  

Week 16: Final term paper submissions. Course review and evaluation.

Students are expected to review class work and complete the set homework assignments. They are also encouraged to come prepared to every class and share their opinions on given topics.

This course adopts an accumulative grading system which divides the final grades into percentages. It is important to note that there will NOT be a final test that counts for 100% of your grade.

• Participation 20%
• Homework assignments 20%
• Mid-term presentation 30%
• Final term paper 30%

Note: Students are required to attend at least 11 of the 15 lessons.
Students who miss 4 or more classes, without valid certified reasons, will be required to speak directly to a university counselor. Failure to do so will result in automatic course failure. Attending 11 lessons does not guarantee a passing grade, please be aware of the other assessment criteria.

Your attendance and participation in class activities are two of the most important elements towards your success in this course. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to contribute actively in class by asking questions and sharing your ideas and opinions in English as much as possible. Do not forget to bring your own electronic or paper bilingual dictionary (English-Japanese). It will be a very useful tool throughout the entire course.
