The first 20 to 25 minutes of each class will be used for extensive reading.

The rest of the class will focus on how to write a research paper and how to give a research presentation. Students will conduct two research projects (RP I and RP II), either in small groups or individually.

Wk. 1: Guidance
Wk. 2: Example research project; start RP I; email for important communication
Wk. 3: Basic organization of a research report (spoken and written); titles in scientific English; grammar: nominalization; example research presentation and written report; published examples of written research reports
Wk. 4: Method section; grammar: past passive voice; draft of Method
Wk. 5: Results section; grammar: simple past; displaying results draft of Results
Wk. 6: Introduction; identifying a knowledge gap; using impersonal language; draft of introduction
Wk. 7: Discussion; filling the knowledge gap; using impersonal language; draft of discussion
Wk. 8 Prepare for presentations
Wk. 9: Presentations for RP I
Wk. 10: Presentations for RP I; how to write an abstract
Wk. 11: Written report for RP I due; start RP II
Wk. 12: Independent work on RP II; prepare for presentations
