/Topic and goals
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

Reading Pass 3, Second Edition (Nan'un-do)

A Shorter Course in Science and Technology Vocabulary (Nan'un-do): This is for self-study, with quizzes during class.

Other materials will be provided electronically by the instructor.

その進め方
/Course outline and weekly schedule
The first half hour of the class will be spent doing extensive reading, where you will be reading a lot of books in easy English.

Also done every week are vocabulary quizzes and 5-minute quick writes.

You will work with the textbook the rest of the class time. You will again spend much time reading, as the ability to write is dependent on the knowledge garnered from reading. In each class you will practice writing summaries in the first half of the semester and one-sided arguments in the second half.

Class 2:        Extensive reading explanation / Library visit
Class 3:        What a summary is, and how to write one / 1: Pro Gaming (summary)
Class 4:        How to avoid committing plagiarism /
                2: The Blogosphere + 3: Organic Food (summary)
Class 5:        Characteristics of academic English / Academic paper format /
                Explanation of the Writing Support Desk and making reservations         
Class 6:        IEEE style / Practice making a reference list /
                4: Franchises + 5: Character Culture (summary)
Class 7: What is a one-sided argument, and how to write one /
                6: Language Change (one-sided argument) - introduction + thesis statement
Class 8:        7: Unlocking Motivation (one-sided argument)
                   - supporting argument + concluding sentence
Class 9:        8: Yellow Dust Storms (one-sided argument)
Class 10:       9: The End of Privacy (one-sided argument)
Class 11:       10: Going Carbon Neutral (one-sided argument) /
                Final paper topic selection
Class 12:       Academic Reading Test / First draft writing
Class 13:       Writing Support Desk feedback sharing + rewriting

/Preparation and review outside class
1.  Read the passage in the assigned lesson before class and be familiarized with the concepts discussed.  
2.  Review your learning after class, and complete whatever assignment due next week.  
3.  No class time is set aside for midterm and final “examinations.”  All papers are to be written outside of class.
4.  You will earn extra points for reading and posting reports outside of class.  (One extra report will carry the same weight as one in-class report.)
