/Topic and goals
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

No textbook to be used. All material will be provided in class; however, students are expected to have a B5 notebook and a clear file for storing important handouts.

Week 2: Course Overview & Introductions/ What is Academic Writing?
Week 3: Plagiarism/How to Summarize, Paraphrase, and Quote to Avoid Plagiarism
Week 4: What Makes Good Writing? (The Six Traits of Effective Writing)
Week 5: Essay Structure, Good Essay Topics, & the Introductory Paragraph
Week 6: Elements of Good Thesis Statement/Round Robin Activity
Week 7: Introductory Paragraph Peer Review & Revision
Week 8: Body Paragraphs/Conferencing
Week 9: Body Paragraphs (cont'd) & Concluding Paragraph
Week 10: Class Exercise 1 (Peer-Review, Revision, & Conferencing)
Week 11: Academic Reading Test                              [Essay - First Draft Due]
Week 12: Concluding Paragraph (Elements of Good Summaries)
Week 13: Class Exercise (Peer-Review, Revision, & Conferencing)       [Essay – Final Draft Due]
