/Topic and goals
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and outlining, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

All materials will be provided by the instructor.
Bring your own video-recording device such as cellphones, ipads, etc.

Class  usually starts with a task called 4-3-2, where students speak on easy, everyday topics to develop speaking fluency.
Speaking tasks will require you to summarize or make an argument based on audio-visual materials.

Class 2: Register to Seesaw; Presentation Structure
Class 3: Summarizing: Main Ideas, Paraphrasing Skills
Class 4: Summarizing: Conclusions
Class 5: Practice and Feedback
Class 6: Presentation 1: Summary  (Round Robin Style)
Class 7: Argument: Exploring Positions
Class 8: Argument: Exploring Positions
Class 9: Argument: Listing the Options  
Class 10: Argument: Listing the Options  
Class 11: Argument: Choosing the Best Solution
Class 12: Practice and Feedback
Class 13: FINAL Presentation (Pecha Kucha Style)
Class 14: FINAL Presentation (Pecha Kucha Style)
Class 15: Wrap-up, Reflection

You should upload a weekly self-recorded video journal on Seesaw.
