/Topic and goals
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and outlining, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

Week 1    Course introduction; Self-introductions. research for first summary
Week 2    Rehearsing first summary, Balancing content and time limit
Week 3    Peer evaluations of presentations
Week 4    Start group oral summaries, using PowerPoint
Week 5    Rehearsal in groups
Week 6    Final summary presentation
Week 7    Final summary presentation,
Week 8    Choosing a topic and designing your first 1-sided argument
Week 9   Practice arguments in groups; peer evaluation,
Week 10   Create arguments in groups of 3
Week 11   Rehearse your arguments
Week 12   FINAL PRESENTATION
Week 13   FINAL PRESENTATION
Week 14   Course overview. Course evaluation survey

This class will be conducted in English. The emphasis of this class is practice, and most of the time in class will be spent either working with classmates to create a presentation or actually presenting.  There will be writing and research assignments to plan for your presentations. Critical evaluation of oneself and of peers will be major components of the class. This entails that revision will also be a major component.
Always bring a learner’s English dictionary to class (paper or digital). An English-Japanese dictionary can also be useful.

There will be homework after many classes. It will all be research or writing for your oral presentations, so there will be no busy work. It depends on your pace, but plan for between 1 and 2 hours of work.
