/Topic and goals
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. two-sided argument and procedure, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. course outline and weekly schedule below.

Week 1  Introduction to class, discuss questions, read, write
Week 2  Introduction to procedures/ process, read and understand example,        hand in Assessment 1A
Week 3  Reading procedures and writing practice
Week 4  Procedure practice, writing - hand in Assessment 1B
Week 5  Presenting procedures in groups, writing practice
Week 6  Peer checking of procedures, re-write and hand in Assessment 2
Week 7 Feedback on Assessment 2, introduction to two-sided arguments
Week 8  Distinguishing opinion and fact, practice writing, hand in Assessment 1C
Week 9 Background information: understand and practice
Week 10 Reasons for: understand and practice
Week 11 Reasons against: understand and practice, hand in Assessment 1D
Week 12 Conclusion/recommendations: understand and practice
Week 13 Final practice of two-sided argument
