/Topic and goals
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. two-sided argument and procedure, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and technical writing, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

As before with ASE I, the teacher's blog will be used in this class to upload class material and information about class preparation and assignments, plus some supporting paper handouts on topics and topic organization.

/Course outline and weekly schedule
Week 1 - Course introduction & guidance

Weeks 2-5 - Pre-teaching survey for new students (Week 2); Topic 3: One-or two-sided arguments about educational systems (with group discussions, developing, presenting & submitting summaries of presentation topics in classes of weeks 2 through 4, with Topic 3 short presentations in Week 5)

Weeks 6-9 - Topic 4: Two-sided arguments concerning Japanese society & change with group discussions, developing, presenting & submitting summaries of two-sided presentation topics in classes of weeks 6 through 8, with Topic 4 short presentations in Week 9)

Weeks 10-14 - Final two-sided argumentative presentations on student choices of topics from teacher suggestions for those who need them (with group discussions, developing, presenting and submitting summaries of two-sided presentation topics in class of weeks 10 through 12; teacher consultation & presentation practice in class of week 13; and final presentations in week 14)

Week 15 - Course review & optional post-teaching survey & review

Week 16 (if necessary) - Make-up/presentation

/Message for students
As with ASE I, this class will be in English only and I will expect you to try your best in it. But I am not looking for "perfect English." I look for the character and quality of your ideas and thinking as you show through your presentations. We can have fun and grow in our classes, and I will work with you to help you develop your ability in English.
