/Topic and goals
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. two-sided argument and procedure, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and technical writing, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

Bring your own video-recording device such as cellphones, etc.

/Course outline and weekly schedule
Class usually starts with a task called 4-3-2, where students speak on easy, everyday topics to develop speaking fluency.
Speaking tasks will require you to summarize or make an argument based on audio-visual materials.

Class 4: Process Genre Analysis
Class 5: Process Presentations (Pecha Kucha Style)
Class 6: Process Presentations (Cont.) (Pecha Kucha Style)
Class 7: Argument Building: Two-Sided
Class 8: Argument Building: Introductions, Thesis
Class 9: Argument Building: Refutation
Class 10: Argument Building: Support
Class 11: Argument Building: Conclusions
Class 12: Practice and Feedback
Class 13: Two-Sided Presentation (Whole Class)
Class 14: Two-Sided Presentation (Whole Class)
Class 15: Wrap-up, Reflection
