/Topic and goals
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. two-sided argument and procedure, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and technical writing, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

/Recommended prerequisites and preparation
If you wish to improve your English in the long term I would recommend a steady effort to develop a language study routine. Different people learn & master languages in different ways, experiment to find your best ways.

/Course textbooks and materials
No fixed textbook. Various handouts, books, articles, and other materials will be used week by week. These materials will be provided in class. Please bring some kind of folder or file so you can keep the materials you receive in good condition for future reference.

/Preparation and review outside class
You should engage in ongoing planning, preparation and practice of 1 sided arguments, procedures and 2 sided arguments. Go over the notes you make in each class and edit and upgrade them, practice actually delivering the spoken versions, consider adding non-verbal components to your work, think ahead to the tasks in the coming weeks.
