/Topic and goals
Due to COVID-19 and the state of emergency, this class will be taught online for at least the first several weeks. We will use Zoom and Google Classroom. I will contact the students assigned to this class soon.

The main purpose of this class is for students to gain facility with academic English in both written and spoken modes.

授業内容と
その進め方
/Course outline and weekly schedule
This class will focus on the following:

1. reading English non-fiction, related especially to science;
2. how to produce a reaction (a summary plus opinion) in spoken and written English;
3. presentation; and
4. discussion.

Except for weeks 10 and 15, there will be extensive reading for the first 30 or 40 minutes of each class.

Grades will be based on student performance. Specifically:

Active participation: 15%
Extensive reading: 15%
Spoken and written reactions: 20% (5% each)
Group presentations: 50% (25% each)
