認知科学は，知性をめぐる諸問題について研究する学際的で総合的な学問であり，哲学，言語学，心理学，人工知能学，脳科学など，文理の諸科学と密接な関連をもつ。 本講義では，実験，調査，コンピュータシミュレーション等の多様な方法論により得られた認知研究の成果を取り上げ，ヒトの知性に関する理解を深めることを目標とする。またこの領域の内容について学ぶとともに，英文テキストを読み，関連文献を参照して調べ，自ら考える力を養う。 Cognitive science is a multidisciplinary area which studies various issues on mind and intelligence, and is connected with deeply with disciplines like philosophy, linguistics, psychology, artificial intelligence, and brain science. The class will focus on basic knowledge and research methods mainly in language studies which is a core function of human intelligence. |

| 授業内容と その進め方 /Course outline and weekly schedule |
具体的な内容と進め方については，参加者の関心と人数とを考慮して決めたい。上記教科書を使う場合，受講者による演習およびディスカッションを中心に進める予定である。また，授業の効果を高めるために，メーリングリスト等も活用する。 使用予定のテキストの主な内容は以下の通りである。本書を利用する場合，1章分を1～3回の授業で扱い，最後の授業でまとめを行う。 1 Reading, the canary in the mind 2 Under the big top: An unusual view of the reading barin 3 Deep reading: Is it endangered? 4 What will become of the readers we have been? 5 The raising of children in a digital age 6 From laps to laptops in the first five years: Don't move too fast 7 The science and poetry in learning (and teaching) to read 8 Building a biliterate brain 9 Reader, come home The contents of the textbook are as above. There are assignments and class activities. |

授業に対する準備状況とレポート(60%)、授業参加状況(40%)に基づき総合的に評価する。 以下の２点が単位取得に必要である。 ・学習内容について基礎的な知識を得ていること ・授業にしっかりと参加していること（最低３分の２以上，出席し，積極的に発言すること） Assignments and reports: 60% Class activities: 40% |
