Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

Week 1 Introduction to class, writing simple self-introduction, introducing summary Week 2 Writing a simple summary Week 3 More understanding of summary, paraphrasing practice, hand in Assessment 1A Week 4 Final summary practice. Week 5 Peer-checking of summary, re-write and hand in Assessment 2 Week 6 Feedback on Assessment 2, introduction to one-sided written argument, practice writing Week 7 Hand in Assessment 1B, topics to discuss and argue about, background information: understand and practice, Week 8 Feedback on Assessment 1B, thesis: understand and practice, Week 9 Hand in Assessment 1C, reasons to support: understand and practice Week 10 Feedback on Assessment 1C, giving evidence, making stronger arguments Week 11 Conclusion/recommendations: understand and practice, final practice of one-sided argument Week 12 Peer-checking of one-sided argument, re-writing, hand in Assessment 3 Week 13 Feedback on Assessment 3 and semester, and reflection subject to change |
