Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

Week 1 Course introduction; Paragraphs Week 2 Types of text; What is a summary? Reportative verbs Week 3 How to analyze an essay; Background, main point, supporting ideas; Reading and analyzing popular English-language texts for a general audience (1) Week 4 Introduction to summaries, writing topic sentences and wrap-up sentences Week 5 Reading and analyzing popular English-language texts for a general audience (2) Week 6 Improving your writing and peer evaluation Week 7 Collect final summary assignment. What is an argument? What makes an argument one-sided? Week 8 Practicing argument structure. Finding the sub-arguments in essays. Week 9 What is a thesis? What is a good thesis? Choosing topics and researching for them Week 10 Writing your introduction Week 11 Writing your body Week 12 Writing your conclusion Week 13 Collect final one-sided argument; Course overview; Course evaluation survey This class will be conducted in English. There will be reading and/or writing assignments on most weeks. Many classes will start with a group discussion based on the homework, so it is essential for the content of the class that all students do the homework every week. Critical evaluation of oneself and of peers will be major components of the class. This entails that revision will also be a major component. Always bring a learner’s English dictionary to class (paper or digital). An English-Japanese dictionary can also be useful. |
