主題および 達成目標 /Topic and goals |
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and outlining, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

授業内容と その進め方 /Course outline and weekly schedule |
Week 1 - Course introduction & guidance Weeks 2-5 - Pre-teaching survey (Week 2); Topic 1: One-sided arguments about important figures in science and technology (with group discussions, developing, presenting & submitting summaries of presentation topics in classes of weeks 2 through 4, with Topic 1 short presentations in Week 5) Weeks 6-9 - Topic 2: One-sided arguments about key inventions and discoveries (with group discussions, developing, presenting & submitting summaries of presentation topics in classes of weeks 6 through 8, with Topic 2 short presentations in Week 9) Weeks 10-14 - Final one-sided argumentative presentations on student choices of topics with teacher suggestions for those who need them (with group discussions, developing, presenting & submitting summaries of presentation topics in class of weeks 10 through 12; teacher consultation & presentation practice in class of week 13; and final presentations in Week 14) Week 15 - Course review & optional post-teaching survey Week 16 (if necessary) - Make-up exam/presentation |
