主題および 達成目標 /Topic and goals |
Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and outlining, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

All materials will be provided by the teacher they will be; Photocopied reading text and lesson support text. |
授業内容と その進め方 /Course outline and weekly schedule |
1. Listening, speaking / discussion / reading / summarizing / writing / oral presentation. 2. There will be pair & group work 3. The class will be taught in English only. 4. Any research will be in English only. Weeks 1-2 Self introduction and activities designed to help all students meet, and get to know each other better. Weeks 2-3 Class survey based on a hot topic, an introduction to others opinions. Weeks 3-4 Intensive reading on the 1st topic, discussion activities for critical thinking, and opinion Weeks 4- 8 Report writing, presentation practice. Mid Term Presentation. 1. An introduction of the topic 2. The history or situation summarized. 3. A conclusion including a supported opinion and a recommendation. Weeks 8-9 Class survey based on the 2nd hot topic, producing stronger opinions. Weeks 9-10 Intensive reading on the 2nd topic, discussion activities for critical thinking, and opinion. Weeks 10-14 Report writing, presentation practice. Final Presentation. 1. An introduction of the topic 2. The history or situation summarized, supported with graph or chart data. 3. A conclusion including a supported opinion and a recommendation. * This schedule may be changed slightly because of progress or average ability of the class. |
