Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and outlining, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

授業内容と その進め方 /Course outline and weekly schedule |
The first half hour of the class will be spent for intensive listening and speaking practice, where you will listen to various different materials from an online listening practice website and practice speaking them. You will practice summarizing based on the contents of what you listen to. You will be engaged in individual practice using a technique called “Mimeospeak.” Your practice making one-sided arguments will be based on the movie you will watch in class. Class 1: Class introduction / Syllabus overview / Explanations of extensive listening and Mimeospeak Class 2: Characteristics of academic English / Structure of spoken summaries / Classes 3 - 6: Practice making summaries Class 7: Summary presentation Class 8: Movie day Class 9: Structure of a one-sided argument Classes 10 - 14:Practice making one-sided arguments Class 15: One-sided argument presentation |
