Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. two-sided argument and procedure, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

Week 1: Guidance and choosing class. Week 2: What is academic writing? Selecting a topic for a two sided argument. Week 3: Skimming and Scanning for key information. Week 4: Locating information, good vs. bad sources. Deciding final essay topic. Week 5: Paraphrasing, quoting and referencing. Summarizing and using linkers. Week 6: Synthesizing from multiple sources. Paragraph structure. Providing support and examples Week 7: Contrasting different points of view. Hedging language. Week 8: Writing Introductions and Conclusions. Week 9: Academic register. Proof reading and peer correction. Week 10: Presenting your paper Week 11: Paper Presentations Week 12: What is a procedure? Week 13: Using linkers in procedures Week 14: Presenting your procedure Week 15: Procedure presentations Week 16: Feedback and reflection |
