Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. two-sided argument and procedure, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and technical writing, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

授業内容と その進め方 /Course outline and weekly schedule |
The class will focus on using spoken English in a register which is appropriate for academic work and will be a continuation of Academic Spoken English I. It will include learning how to do a spoken procedure in English and learning how to present a two-sided argument consisting of background information, an opinion statement, good reasons to support the opinion, reasons to oppose the opinion, and a conclusion. The focus is on spoken English and the class will also be taught through English. Week 1: Guidance Week 2: Course outline Week 3: Introduction to academic spoken English Week 4: Listening skills activity & Presentation Week 5: Listening skills activity & Presentation Week 6: Listening skills activity & Presentation Week 7: Listening skills activity & Presentation Week 8: Overview for presenting a two-sided argument Week 9: Two-sided argument "Thesis Statement" Week 10: Two-sided argument "Arguments for and support" Week 11: Two-sided argument "Transition signals, quotations and paraphrases" Week 12: Two-sided argument "Arguments against and support", "Conclusion" Week 13: Two-sided argument presentation Week 14: Two-sided argument presentation Week 15: Reflection (Note: Schedule subject to change) |
