The objectives of Academic English for the Second Year I Students will demonstrate the ability to: • participate effectively in academic discussions • use academic writing conventions in their own writing • identify instances of plagiarism • argue in support of or against an issue • summarize, paraphrase, and quote, as appropriate • read critically and respond orally or in writing to implied ideas, and elaborate, evaluate, and analyze the author’s purpose and main points • evaluate the text’s strengths and weaknesses • read critically and revise thoughtfully through drafting and staged assignments. |

TENTATIVE COURSE OUTLINE ** This calendar is likely to change in order to accommodate learning needs. Week 1: Course Overview/ Introductions Week 2: Introduction to Academic Research: Brainstorming & Selecting a Research Topic Week 3: Types of Research/ Introduction to Survey Writing Week 4: Writing Survey Questions/ Group Activity Week 5: Citation in Research/ How to Write a Reference List Week 6: Citation in Research/ Literature Review Week 7: Presentation Skills – Organization Week 8: Presentation Skills – Note Cards/ Delivery Week 9: Presentation Skills – Delivery/ Graph Description Week 10: Presentation Skills – Making Effective PPT Presentation Week 11: Work-in-Class/ Consultation/ Presentation Preparation Week 12: Presentation (Group 1) Week 13: Presentation (Group 2) Week 14: Research Outline/ Starting a Research Paper Week 15: Research Outline/ Peer Review/Course Evaluation |

Students are expected to: • stay on top of their assignments (both in-class and homework) • balance their responsibilities and set their own priorities • set aside at least an hour per week outside of class for studying and assignments • work outside of class for preparation for projects, presentations and writing assignments. |
成績評価方法 および評価基準 (最低達成基準を含む) /Evaluation and grading |
Participation & Effort 10% Vocabulary Quizzes 10% Class/Homework 10% Written Projects 35% Presentations 35% **Rubrics will be provided before each assignment or task. Your grade for the semester is calculated from your achievement in the assignments and your effort in class and homework. You will have to give evidence that you have done the work. Remember, you get what you earn. I do not hand out A’s at the door. You are expected to participate actively in all class activities. Do NOT sleep in class and pay attention. Inappropriate behavior will count as one absence. If you are going to be absent, please talk to or email me before class begins to make arrangements for turning in your homework, making up class work, or getting any assignments or handouts you missed. If you do not contact me before class starts, any assignments you need to turn in will be considered late and you will not get credit for them. |
