This course offers students opportunities to develop academic English, especially speaking and writing. However, students are expected to read and listen to various kinds of texts, and work with other students inside (and possibly outside) the class in order to successfully improve their speaking and writing. Students will be able to do the followings after this course; 1. Understanding and summarizing texts 2. Reacting to opinions 3. Reading and listening actively to collect information 4. Performing critical thinking 5. Organizing information and performing presentations 6. Organizing information and write academic essays |

Materials necessary for each class will be distributed before or in the beginning of each class. Students will be asked to prepare class materials each time if they have to do on their ends. |

Week 1: Structure for Reaction Paper and choosing articles (Writing) Week 2: Text reading and summary writing practice (Writing) Structure for presentation for Individual Presentation (Speaking) Week 3: Pre-writing for Reaction Paper 1: intro and thesis, and writing exercise (Writing) Preparation for Individual Presentation: planning (Presentation) Week 4: Pre-writing for Reaction Paper 1: bodies - topic sentences and supporting details and writing exercise (Writing) Preparation for Individual Presentation: organizing information (Speaking) Week 5: Peer review of Reaction paper 1 (Writing) Practice for Individual Presentation (Speaking) Week 6:Individual Presentation for Reaction Paper 1 (Speaking) Week 7: Submission of Reaction Paper 1 (Writing) Individual Presentation for Reaction paper 1 (Speaking) Week 8: Pre-writing for Reaction Paper 2: intro and thesis, and writing exercise (Writing) Presentation formatting for one-sided argument (Speaking) Week 9: Pre-writing for Reaction Paper 2 (Body: topic sentences and supporting details) and writing exercise (Writing) Preparation for Individual Presentation 2: choosing topics (Speaking) Week 10: Pre-writing for Reaction Paper 2: supporting details, and writing exercise (Writing) Preparation for Individual Presentation 2: planning (Speaking) Week 11: Peer-reviewing for Reaction Paper 2 (Writing) Preparation for Individual Presentation 2: organizing information to present (Speaking) Week 12: Citation format, the second peer-review for Reaction Paper 2 (Writing) Practice for Individual Presentation 2 (Speaking) Week 13: Submission of Reaction paper 2 (Writing) Practice for Individual Presentation 2 (Speaking) Week 14: Final Presentation Please note; * There might be a class on exam week for those who cannot finish their presentations on week 15. *Each student chooses articles for Reaction Paper 1/Individual Presentation, and Reaction Paper 2/ Individual Presentation 2. *The class schedule above is subject to change depending on the progress of each class. |
