Welcome to this class! Like ASE and AWE I & II, the goal in this course is to develop your speaking and writing skills over a range of topics through further development of summary writing, outlining, oral presentation, and short academic composition writing preparation centered on one-and two-sided argumentation and reactions to topics, and to continue supporting your ideas and opinions with critical thinking within your preparation towards reactions in your presentations and compositions. |

There is no textbook. The teacher's blog (The Daily Sekaijin - www.dailysekaijin.blogspot.com) may be used in this class to upload class material and information about class preparation and assignments, plus some supporting paper handouts on topics and topic organization. |
授業内容と その進め方 /Course outline and weekly schedule |
Week 1: Class information & pre-teaching survey Weeks 2-5: Reading/discussing/developing spoken one- or two-sided arguments and written reactions with social issues (Weeks 2 through 4), with short presentation of a one- or two-sided argument and developed short written reaction (Week 5) Weeks 6-9: Reading/discussing/developing spoken two-sided arguments and written reactions with science & technological issues and rough version of short presentation on issue topics (Weeks 6 through 8), with development of a short presentation of a two-sided argument and developed short written reaction (Week 9) Weeks 10-14: Final presentation & longer written reaction discussion/development (Weeks 10 through 12), with final drafts of longer written reactions (Week 13) and final developed presentations plus any late written reaction final drafts (Week 14) Week 15: Extra final presentations (if needed)/optional post-teaching survey |

Active participation: 20%; presentations & short written reactions 1 and 2: 50% (each presentation 15%; each written reaction 10%) Final spoken presentation & short written reaction composition: 30% (Presentation outline 5%; spoken reaction presentation 10%; written reaction composition 15%) |
