This class will serve as an extension to Academic Written and Spoken English. It will focus on expanding upon what you learned in your 1st year and will help you develop essential academic skills. The focus will be twofold: (1) how to present in English and (2) how to write an academic paper. These skills will be essential to your success in the field of academia. This course will also feature an extensive reading module. Graded readers and other texts will serve as topics for some of your summaries and reaction papers. |

1. Guidance 2. What is the course? AE? Semester 2 overview (Goal: Understand the syllabus and purpose of the class: Being able to organize your opinions and present them.) 3. Oral and written summaries + reactions 4. (Cont.) Oral and written summaries + reactions 5. Writing 1: What is an essay? How is it structured. Prewriting and brainstorming. Choosing source Submit Essay Topic (Goals: Understand a basic essay structure. Choosing Topic/ Choosing sources) 6. Writing 2: The perfect paragraph. Thesis Statement/ Submit sources (Goals: Understand the importance of a thesis statement. Basic paragraph structure. 7. Writing 3: Building the body (Goals: Learn how to structure the body of an essay. Adding the “bulk” of the content.) 8. Writing 4: References References References (Goals: To fully understand how to write and source in APA. Submit Draft 1 10. Presentation 1: What do the experts do? Submit References Goals: Let us observe from the best. ) 11. Presentation 2: The basics / Submit Draft 2 Goals: Learn common mistakes, what not to do/ what to do with presentations. . 12 Presentation 3 Peer Review Goals: Learn how to use visuals to your advantage. . 13 Presentation – Practice Final Presentations / Skill Review 14 Final Presentations Final Draft Due 15.
