Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

Session 2: Class Introduction. Instructions on writing journals, doing journal discussions, and identifying the main points of the journals. Be sure to join the Zoom meeting.

Session 3: Journal 1 due. Journal Discussion #1. Getting Ready to Write, Paragraph Structure, Topic Sentence.

Session 4: Journal 2 due. Journal Discussion #2. Elements of Good Writing.Transition words or signals.

Session 5: Journal 3 due. Journal Discussion #3. The Writing Process.Writing Summaries.Introduction to One-sided Argument.

Session 6: Journal 4 due. Journal Discussion #4. Basic Essay Structure.

Session 7: Journal 5 due. Journal Discussion #5. Introductory Paragraphs. Thesis Statements.

Session 8: Journal 6 due. Journal Discussion #6. Persuasive Essay.
