Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

TENTATIVE COURSE OUTLINE ** This calendar is likely to change in order to accommodate learning needs. Week 1: Guidance Week 2: Course Overview & Introductions/ What is Academic Writing? Week 3: Plagiarism/How to Summarize, Paraphrase, and Quote to Avoid Plagiarism Week 4: What Makes Good Writing? (The Six Traits of Effective Writing) Week 5: Essay Structure, Good Essay Topics, & the Introductory Paragraph Week 6: Elements of Good Thesis Statement/Round Robin Activity Week 7: Introductory Paragraph Peer Review & Revision Week 8: Body Paragraphs/Conferencing Week 9: Body Paragraphs (cont'd) & Concluding Paragraph Week 10: Class Exercise 1 (Peer-Review, Revision, & Conferencing) Week 11: Academic Reading Test [Essay - First Draft Due] Week 12: Concluding Paragraph (Elements of Good Summaries) Week 13: Class Exercise (Peer-Review, Revision, & Conferencing) [Essay – Final Draft Due] Week 14: Class Exercise Week 15: Review/Reflection/In-class course evaluation |

PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE REPEATING THIS COURSE (再履修生必読): I will ONLY accept "repeater students" who have filled in the forms at Kyomuka and whose names appear on the official class register. English Department is splitting the repeater students evenly between each class, and I am sorry to say this, but your individual wish will not be granted at this time. 再履修生は事前に教務課へ「英語再履修の申請」用紙を提出する必要があり、各クラスへ人数が均等になるように割り振られます。教員を選ぶことはできません。教務課発行の履修者リストに掲載されていない学生は、Zoom授業に入室できません。 |
