Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e. one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

Week 1 Course Guidance, Ice breaker activity – Self/Peer introduction through speaking and writing Week 2 Introduction to Summary writing – Main ideas Week 3 Summarizing – Paraphrasing & Conclusion, Reading articles in the course textbook Week 4 Practice of writing a summary about the article students read Week 5 Peer editing and Revising a summary Week 6 Introduction to Paragraph writing – Topic sentence, Supporting sentences, Concluding sentence, Transition words, Outline Week 7 Introduction to Essay writing – Thesis statement, Introductory paragraph, Concluding paragraph Week 8 Reading and/or Listening to an article and Discussion Week 9 Introduction to Argumentative (One-sided argument) essay Week 10 Practice of writing an argumentative essay about the article students read Week 11 Reading and/or listening to an article and Discussion Week 12 Writing an argumentative essay about the topics students choose Week 13 Peer editing and Revising a draft Week 14 Reading an article and Discussion Week 15 Wrap-up of the course, Final Quiz Note: This course is subject to change depending on the ability and progress of the class. |
