Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e., one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and outlining, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

This class will have a high emphasis on speaking practice so will involve extensive pair and group discussions. Students should expect to be active in every class.

Lesson 5: Group summary presentation

Lesson 7: One-sided argument structure and introduction
Lesson 8: One-sided argument main body and conclusion
Lesson 9: Practice constructing arguments
Lesson 10: Prepare one-sided argument in groups
Lesson 11: Practice group presentations
Lesson 12: Final group presentations
Lesson 13: Final group presentations
Lesson 14: Self-reflection and peer review of presentations
