Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic spoken English, i.e. two-sided argument and procedure, selected for students of science and engineering. It fosters the basic academic speaking and listening skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as reading and technical writing, required for achieving the communicative goals of the genres. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below. |

Week 1 Course introduction; Discussing summer vacation. Week 2 What is a procedure? Starting your first procedure. Week 3 Practice your oral procedure in groups Week 4 Peer evaluation of procedure, Start group procedures Week 5 Work on group procedures Week 6 Practice procedures, Week 7 Graded presentations of procedures Week 8 Finish graded presentations, What is a 2-sided argument? Week 9 Hedging your opinion, practice in groups and convince your classmates Week 10 Peer evaluations of 2-sided arguments. Start group 2-sided arguments. Week 11 Work on group presentations in class Week 12 Practice presentations in class Week 13 FINAL PRESENTATION Week 14 FINAL PRESENTATION; Week 15 Course overview; Course evaluation survey This class will be conducted in English. It will be conducted on Zoom, with classwork and homework distributed and submitted through Google Classroom. The emphasis of this class is practice, and most of the time in class will be spent either working with classmates to create a presentation or actually presenting. There will be writing and research assignments to plan for your presentations. Critical evaluation of oneself and of peers will be major components of the class. This entails that revision will also be a major component. Always be ready to look up words you don't know in the dictionary. Using both an English-English dictionary and an English-Japanese dictionary is most effective. |

There will be research and writing to do after most classes. This will all be necessary for your in-class presentations, so there will be no busy work. It depends on your pace, but plan for 1-2 hours of work most weeks. |
