AE I: Building on what they have learned in Academic Spoken English I and II and Academic Written English I and II, students in this course will review and further learn how to summarize and how to organize different kinds of arguments, in both spoken and written English. Students will prepare both spoken and written reactions, consisting of a summary followed by an original argument, to spoken and/or written texts. Students will also develop academic skills necessary for academic communication, including presentation and critical thinking skills. |

1. Guidance 2. What is the course? AE? Semester 1 and 2 overview (Goal: Understand the syllabus and purpose of the class: Being able to organize your opinions and present them) 3. The Basics: How to make an Introduction. Formal vs Informal (Goal: Ext of the previous goal. Basic of good presentation skills) 4. Quick Summary – The elevator speech. (Goal: Learn how to give quick oral summaries and explanations) 5. Your Opinion (Goal: Learn how to give a critical summary of a presentation or written work) HW: Rx1 6. Skim/Scan. How to read and summarize (Goal: How to quickly review texts/ and extract key information. How to give a quick oral summary) 7. Skim/Scan (Cont) (Goal: To continue w/ scanning and quick summaries) Introduce to presentation 1 8 Taking a stand (Goal: To be able to state a strong academic argument) HW: Rx2 9. Pros and Cons – Two Sided Argument (Goal: To be able to understand both sides of an argument and present either side) HW: Rx3 10. Presentation 1: (Goal: To learn how to be persuasive) HW: Choose a topic for next week 11. Presentation Project 1- Preparation Phase. (Goal: To plan your final project, and to understand the expectations) HW: Rx4 12. Presentation Project 2 – Creation Phase (Goal: To understand the role of visuals and how to organize your speech) HW: Rx5 13. Presentation Project 3- Fine Tuning (Goal: To learn what not to do during your presentation) 14. Final Presentations 1 15. Final Presentations (Cont). |
