/Themes and goals(up to 2,000 letters)
Students in this course will understand the components of a scientific research report,
which includes both written research reports and spoken research presentations. This
course fosters academic skills necessary to perform research and communicate research
findings, including writing, presenting, and critical thinking skills. This will be
accomplished by conducting one or more research projects, either individually or in a
group, and writing at least one research paper and giving at least one research
presentation. Activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual
teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

Week 1: Course Overview & Introductions/ What is Academic Investigation?
Week 2: Plagiarism/ How to Summarize, Paraphrase, and Quote to Avoid it
Week 3: Structure: Parts of a Research Paper/ Starting a Research Paper: Introduction/ Thesis Statement
Week 4: Finding Information: Citation in Research
Week 5: Analyzing Research Paper Samples/ Writing “Method” Section
Week 6: Conducting a Research/ Writing “Discussion” Section
Week 7: Work-in-Class/Consultation/ Peer Review
Week 8: First Draft Due
Week 9: Work-in-Class/Consultation/ Peer Review
Week 10: Second Draft Due
Week 11: Work-in-Class/Consultation/ Lesson on “Abstract” Writing

**Rubrics will be provided before each assignment or task.

Your grade for the semester is calculated from your achievement in the assignments and your effort in class and homework. You will have to give evidence that you have done the work. Remember, you get what you earn. I do not hand out A’s at the door.

You are expected to participate actively in all class activities. Do NOT sleep in class and pay attention. Inappropriate behavior will count as one absence.

If you are going to be absent, please talk to or email me before class begins to make arrangements for turning in your homework, making up class work, or getting any assignments or handouts you missed. If you do not contact me before class starts, any assignments you need to turn in will be considered late and you will not get credit for them.

PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE REPEATING THIS COURSE (再履修生必読):

I will ONLY accept "repeater students" who have filled in the forms at Kyomuka and whose names appear on the official class register. English Department is splitting the repeater students evenly between each class, and your individual wish will not be granted at this time.
再履修生は事前に教務課へ「英語再履修の申請」用紙を提出する必要があり、各クラスへ人数が均等になるように割り振られます。教員を選ぶことはできません。教務課発行の履修者リストに掲載されていない学生は、Zoom授業に入室できません。
