Students in this course will understand the components of genres of academic written English, i.e., one-sided argument and summary, selected for students of science and engineering. The course fosters the basic academic reading and writing skills as well as critical thinking and other academic skills, such as discussion, required for achieving students’ communicative goals. In-class activities and teaching materials are chosen and designed by individual teachers as shown in the course outline and weekly schedule below.

    Week 2: Writing mechanics, e.g.  capitalization, abbreviation, spelling,
            punctuation
    Week 3: Basic grammar rules, e.g. subject-verb agreement
    Week 4: Topic 1: Unlocking Motivation (example)
    Week 5: Format of a summary
    Week 6: Basic summary skills (1): Understanding the original text
    Week 7: Basic summary skills (2): Identifying the 5Ws
    Week 8: Peer review of summaries
    Week 9: Organization of a one-sided argument
    Week 10: Topic 2 Yellow Dust Storms (example)
    Week 11: Formatting academic papers + referencing
    Week 12: Writing the introductory paragraph + Characteristics of a thesis
           statement
    Week 13: Writing support paragraphs

Regarding the homework assignment from 10th June (=write an Introduction + Body paragraph + 2 Topic sentences):

We will be working on this document little by little throughout the semester. You will be asked to write more / make improvements / edit this document, and you'll work on it using the knowledge and skills which you learn in class. For example, you have already edited the document using the information from the "Improving Your Work" handout.

We'll continue to cover new topics in class and apply them to this document as the course goes on.

There will be homework, preparation, and/or self-study assignments every week. Students are expected to complete all assignments on time. Students may not receive credit for late assignments.

Homework for 29th July:

Finish your Essay.  Please understand that this essay is very important for your final grade: no essay, no pass.

Please write the Concluding paragraph of your essay. After you do this, look at page 86 in the textbook, and use the checklist to help you improve your essay.


Save your essay in a Microsoft Word file, and title it like this:

P1, Your Name, Student Number, AWE Essay

Please note: your name must be in English!


Email me with your essay before 23:59 on Thursday 28th July.

If you are having problems submitting your essay, you must talk to me next week (not email) since it is the last chance to fix any problems. Please remember that this essay will decide your final grade: no essay, no pass.

There is a tutorial class on Tuesday, period 5, for students who have difficulty understanding the class content. Contact your teacher if you would like to attend the tutorial class. Students who attend the tutorial class are still required to attend their regular class.
