The purpose of this course is to help you gain a basic understanding of what culture is and how it affects how we think and communicate. Through the activities in the textbook, you will learn about the differences and similarities between cultures. This will not only help you communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds, but also deepen the understanding of your own cultural identity. An understanding of intercultural communication will help you gain a better experience when you study or work with people from different cultures in the future. |

Through this course, students' awareness of cultural differences will be raised and the understanding of their own culture will be deepened. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to - reflect on their own culture and see their own culture from a different perspective - have basic knowledge of key concepts on intercultural communication - become more aware of cultural differences - increase academic vocabulary and improve speaking and discussion skills Week 1: Class introduction, Introduction to Intercultural Communication, Student selection Week 2: Communication Week 3: Culture Week 4: Nonverbal Communication Week 5: Communicating Clearly Week 6: Culture and Values Week 7: Culture and Perception Week 8: Mid Term presentation Week 9: Diversity Week 10: Stereotypes Week 11: Culture Shock Week 12: Culture and Change Week 13: Talking about Japan Week 14: Becoming a Global Person Week 15: Presentations & self-evaluations Note: The weekly schedule is subject to change depending on the class size and students' English ability. |

Preparation by reading assigned readings and activities for the class should be completed as instructed prior to each class. Students are expected to spend about one to two hours each week to complete assignments and review class notes. |
