This course focuses on developing research writing skills. Students will learn to recognize various sources of scientific research material, practice skimming, scanning, and speed reading, critically evaluate journals and other research, and familiarize themselves with essential vocabulary and tools to improve their reading comprehension. These critical reading skills will then be applied to enhance their academic writing for research purposes. By the end of the course, students should gain skills to read scientific papers critically and be able to summarize the key ideas from scientific research. Also to be able to synthesize the ideas across various summaries. Students are expected to express their opinions in English. The classes will be conducted in English.

Week 1:  Class introduction, Introduction to Research Writing, Student selection
Week 2: Planning and preparation
Week 3: Sentence and paragraph structure
Week 4: Breaking up long sentence
Week 5: Being concise and removing redundancy
Week 6: Avoid ambiguity, repetition, and vague language
Week 7: Clarifying who did what
Week 8: Highlight findings
Week 9: Discussing limitations
Week 10: Hedging and criticising, plagiarism and paraphrasing
Week 11: Titles and abstracts
Week 12: Introduction, review of literature
Week 13: Method and results
Week 14: Discussion & conclusion
Week 15: Final check

Preparation by reading assigned readings and activities for the class should be completed as instructed prior to each class. Students are expected to spend about one to two hours each week to complete assignments and review class notes.
