Your achievements whatever they are must be expressed, preferably in the universal languages: math and English. Among various ways to express, this course puts an emphasis on writing. Why? That’s what you must uncover throughout this course. This course shall provide you with opportunities to think about various why’s in studying math and languages and to express your answers in English.

We plan to use one of the papers written by Geoffrey E. Hinton, one of the fathers of Deep Learning.

There’s no specific textbook for this course. References include

/Course outline and weekly schedule(up to 2,000 letters)
This course covers the following topics, hopefully in this order:
1. Why do we still study English in this AI era?
2. Men willingly believe what they wish to be true. - Is grammar the least significant?
3. Churchill’s memorandum on wartime economics of writing – how to omit needless words?
4. Grammar 1: Declare first, then refer - How to use articles and pronouns?
5. Logic 1: Modus ponens (P implies Q. P is true, so Q is true), and how to avoid hackneyed “so” in it?
6. Feedback on Report 1
7. Introduction to 5 sentence patterns and 25 verb patterns
8. Grammar 2. Let it be - What kind of verbs can be used to define?
9. Logic 2. A functionally complete set - {AND, OR, NOT} is enough to express all possible truth tables.
10. Grammar 3. Restrictive and non-restrictive uses of “which” - To define is to limit. Just one comma deprives a relative clause of capability to limit.
11. Logic 3. Proof - Suppose there were just a finite number of primes.
12. Grammar 4. Active and passive voices – Whodunit?
13. Grammar 5. Tense – How to describe related works?
14. All Gaul is divided into three parts - How to keep reviewers from leaning towards rejection?
15. Why do we still study English in this AI era (revisited)? – The Kurzweil’s law of accelerating returns

/Course content utilizing practical experience
Seki, the primary lecturer, had been studying and teaching math and computer science in English in Canada and Finland about 10 years after graduating from the master program at UEC. This course is designed based on the obstacles he encountered then.

A sufficient number of exercises shall be offered during every class. You should prioritize courses in math and computer science in order to achieve something worth being expressed in English.
