Goals of the course
This course consists of 4 special lectures and guided discussions on topics related to
the sustainability of societies, cultures, technologies, institutions, and the environment.
Through the lectures and exchanges of ideas, students are expected to discover the
networks of knowledge and issues and the connections between their own research
topics and other related fields as we work on the sustainability of our lives, society, and
the planet.
Through the series of lectures, this course aims to help students develop an integrated
view of sustainability and research on it. Students are requested to join the lectures and
following discussions.
Overview of the course
The concept of sustainability requires an integrated view based on the understanding that
human activities are embedded in the relations of societies that inhabit the natural
environment, that is, within the planetary boundary (Steffen et al. 2015, Raworth 2017,
Schoenmaker and Schramade 2019). The special lectures allow students to discover
connections with other research fields. The lectures also intend to relate academic
research to issues in actual society and the world while fostering the exchange of ideas
between students in various fields (in different universities). Students are requested to
join the lectures and following discussions.
